Special Photos for Chapter 9 on Aging in Mexico (cont.)

This photo was taken in 1978 and shows an elderly women weaving "ixtle" a rough cloth derived from the leaves of the mague cactus. It is used for carrying cloths. In the 1970s women began to learn this traditional weaving technique by age 14, but in the 1990s such work is rarely seen and then only among women over age 60.

As seen in this 1973 photo a popular pastime of older men who have given over control of their property to one of their adult sons is to ride in the mountains and either hunt or pick mushrooms or other wild vegetables.
