Special Photos for Chapter 9 on Aging in Mexico (cont.)

Update for Chapter 9 (cont.)

n 1994 while doing research for chapter 9, I went outside at 6am and saw my neighbor 90 year old Juoquin Velazquez (mentioned in chapter 9) walking up the mountain to "milk" sap from a maguey cactus on the edge of his corn field. This would then be put in a wooden cask at his house where he was fermenting "pulque, " a type of cactus beer.

I am seen here with the elderly Juoquin Velazquez who was now in his 90s.

Talking with Juoqin's son Santiago (age 63), who was regarded asa model of good aging by others in the village, (see pages 199-7).

In chapter 9 I mentioned that community fiestas were a place where the older and younger generations interact together in the most important public performances which go on in the village. While I was there in 1998 I took this photo showing just such a fiesta dance, with the youngest performer being just five years old and the oldest in their late 60s.
