Here's some history of our area for ya...

Anna Maria Island

Joseph Arnold Hayes - The Desperate Hours

He wrote this novel while spending the summer of 1952 on Anna Maria Island. It was later made into a famous Tony Award-winning play starring Paul Newman and Fredric March. In 1955, a film version was made starring March and Humphrey Bogart.

Ellenton

East of Palmetto on U.S. 301, Ellenton is the site of the Gamble Plantation, the only Confederate shrine in Florida and the oldest building residing on our west coast. The 1850 mansion situated on the 3,000-acre plantation was the place where the secretary of state of the Confederacy, Judah Benjamin took refuge. At the end of the Civil War, he made his final escape to England where he practiced law for 17 years.

Eli N. Evan-  Judah P. Benjamin: The Jewish Confederate
