Elementary Education Program with a Concentration in Science and Mathematics

This program is intended for certified, practicing elementary classroom teachers who have a strong interest in teaching roles in mathematics and science in their respective schools and districts.

The Master of Arts in Elementary Education with the Math / Science emphasis has the following goals.

  • Mathematics and science knowledge enhancement for practicing elementary teachers
  • Standards-based content examination, pedagogy and assessment for elementary mathematics and science
  • Reading and applied educational research in the classroom
  • Student data usage to develop research and standard-based strategies to enhance student achievement
  • Excitement and enthusiasm creation for learning that will spill over to your own classrooms

Admissions Requirements

  • Must be teaching at the time of admissions (two years teaching experience recommended but must be teaching at time of admission) AND
  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited university and teacher certification in an appropriate area AND
  • At least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in all coursework taken to satisfy the requirements of the bachelor’s degree, and in the upper two years’ coursework (upper 60 hours) of the undergraduate degree requirements AND one of the following:
    • A grade point average of 3.0 or greater for the upper two years’ coursework (upper 60 hours) of the undergraduate degree OR
    • A minimum score of 153 on the verbal section and 144 on the quantitative section of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) taken within the previous five (5) years OR
    • A previous graduate degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
