At the USF St. Petersburg Department of Journalism and Media Studies, we’re dedicated to educating journalists and professional communicators who can report and interpret news and information with skill, responsibility and social consciousness. We stress innovative, community-oriented coverage of public life, seeking out news and issues that touch the lives of ordinary citizens. We embrace the world of digital communication, where everyone is both a consumer and producer of content. Our coursework encompasses theory, law and ethics alongside visual communication, technology and community engagement.

The department offers an undergraduate degree, an on-campus masters degree, a fully-online masters degree, and a graduate certificate in food writing and photography. Undergraduate students may also minor in Journalism and Media Studies.

JMS Undergrad Places Among Top 25 in Movie Competition

USFSP junior Shannon Gazdacka was recently awarded a top 25 spot in the first annual TERMINUS campus movie awards. Shannon produced a short documentary, “Survived By,” which placed highly among Campus Movie Fest’s best documentaries. Students from university campuses across the nation contributed short films to the competition. All winners can be found here.


Tampa Bay Times Seeking Sports Clerk

The Tampa Bay Times is looking for a part-time agate clerk in sports. Clerks work 3-4 nights a week, generally 6 or 7 p.m. to midnight.     All programs allow for individually tailored approaches to journalism studies to accommodate the varied backgrounds and interests of our students.

    The programs stress intellectually stimulating seminar-style classes taught by professors and part-time faculty with strong academic credentials and professional experience. Skills classes admit no more than 20 students.
