Meet Andy Dang, the newest Conference & Events Planner at the USFSP University Student Center.  Andy was born in Ottawa, Canada to first-generation immigrant parents from Vietnam.  In the early 90s, his father was employed by Nortel Networks Corporation after finishing college at Carleton University in Ottawa and was offered an opportunity to move to the United States of America, which is when the family decided to move to Raleigh, North Carolina.

After growing up in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina, Andy attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC where he pursued his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and eventually a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration where he held graduate assistantships in Appalachian’s Welcome Weekend Orientation program and academic advising.  The combination of his experience in customer service, student development, live music and event management in a university setting, led Andy to working in Higher Education Administration specializing in event operations, as this would let him work with a mix of government, educational initiatives, and being able to serve as a mentor to young adults.  Andy found a great love for working events in a Student Union environment, getting the opportunity to work with a wildly diverse variety of events.  This stemmed from a summer internship during his graduate school years working at NC State’s Talley Student Union, an internship with an Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Regional Conference, and eventually serving on the national Conference Management Team for the ACUI 100th Anniversary conference.

Upon graduation from his Master’s program, Andy was offered an event and program coordinator position working for the Office of International Services at USF in Tampa, FL in Spring of 2014 (GO BULLS!!!).  He has since made the transition to his role as the newest Conference & Event Planner at the University Student Center at USFSP early Fall of 2015.  Andy says that his job “challenges him on a daily basis in the best possible way”, working with client inquiries to deliver the events that they envision to support the growth of USFSP, utilizing a mix of his diverse experience in event management, serving and food industry, retail management, and higher education administration.  In addition to his work with the USC, he is currently pursuing his MBA at the USF Tampa campus.  He says that some of his favorite things about working at USF St. Petersburg is “the community feel of the institution, being seconds away from the water, and the rapid expansion of a vibrant campus that values a good experience for its students that leads to a world of opportunities beyond college”.
