The USF Coed Sailing Team qualifies to compete in the 2016-2017 College Sailing Match Racing National Championship that will take place in San Diego Nov. 18-20. The team successfully competed in a conference championship regatta on Oct. 22 in Charleston, S.C., against three other teams from the College of Charleston, Jacksonville University, and Eckerd College.
Match races consist of one-on-one racing, with one boat competing directly against another. The USF coed team that will compete in November includes three men and one woman—all of whom train at USF St. Petersburg:
- Sean Cornell, a Finance junior at USFSP
- Brendan Feeney, a pre-Business Administration sophomore at USFSP
- Scott Ewing, an Environmental Science and Policy junior at USF Tampa
- Mandi Dickie, a Biology junior at USFSP
“We were third last year and it did not sit well with the team,” said Alan Capellin, coach of the USF Coed Sailing Team, which is located at USFSP. “This year, the team focused a lot harder. I am very proud of them. They maintained a really good boat speed and did not make the mental mistakes they did last year.”
In the spring, the team finished ninth in the nation at the College Dinghy Nationals in San Diego. Capellin said Cornell and Ewing were on a team that finished second in the U.S. Sailing Youth Match Racing Championships in the summer.
“Racing sailboats is a great way to network with working professionals,” he said. “I worked in the marine industry and raced for my employers for nearly 30 years; I made a ton of connections and friends. Being on the sailing team starts the networking process; some of my closest friends are people I sailed against or with in college.”
