Librarian Talks About History of Florida’s Tourism Industry

USF St. Petersburg faculty librarian receives Presidential Citation from Florida Historical Society.

USF St. Petersburg faculty librarian James “Jim” Schnur holds the Presidential Citation from the Florida Historical Society award he received in 2015.

In a special for WUSF Public Media, Jim Schnur, special collections librarian at USF St. Petersburg, explains the history of Florida’s tourism industry, which stretches back to the late 19th century.

“People didn’t come here to ride roller coasters. They came here in the early 20th century— late 19th and early 20th century—often for more curative reasons,” said Schnur. “A lot of people came here for health reasons. Once they came here, and they made transformations to the landscape, communities developed; others want to come down here as well.”
