‘Data Play Date’ to Teach Basics of Data Journalism

A digital graphic for the Data Play Date event on April 30 The Online News Association USFSP (ONA) student organization will host a “Data Play Date” on Saturday, April 30 from noon to 5 p.m. The free event will include four hands-on sessions with local professionals that include Eli Murray, news app developer at the Tampa Bay Times, and Mark Douglas, investigative reporter at WFLA.

Adam Playford, director of Data/Digital Enterprise at the Tampa Bay Times who contributed to the Pulitzer award-winning series Failure Factories, will serve as the keynote speaker.

“The purpose of the data play date is to show data is awesome, necessary, and accessible,” said Lorien Mattiacci, president of ONA USFSP and a graduate student in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. “We’re also providing access to high level professionals, and we’re meeting the community at their level, no matter how basic or advanced.”

The event will be held in Davis Hall room 130. Participants must bring a laptop to use during the hands-on sessions. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early. Register now online to reserve your seat.
