The fundraising momentum continues: USF St. Petersburg has announced the creation of The Gary Mormino Fund. This new fund will support the Florida Studies Program, which Mormino co-founded. More than 25 individuals have already contributed or pledged their support. The goal is to raise $30,000 to endow and operate it.

“It’s easy to pay tribute to Gary Mormino! Once you get to know Gary and his dedication to teaching, writing and to this institution, it’s easy to speak from the heart,” Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska told a crowd who had gathered at Nelson Poynter Memorial Library to celebrate Mormino and the fund. “Thank you, Gary, for your scholarship and service to USF St. Petersburg. Thank you for continuing to represent us so well, for contributing to the excellence that is Florida Studies.”

Mormino is the Frank E. Duckwall Florida Professor of History Emeritus at USF St. Petersburg. He is a frequent contributor to the Tampa Bay Times and has written several books, including “Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida.” Last month, he was awarded the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing by the Florida Humanities Council.
