Hardware & Software

Faculty, Staff, and Students are able to purchase computers, components, accessories, and software at a discounted price from the USF Computer Store. This is also where you will find suggested hardware and software for departmental purchases and upgrades.

In addition, site-licensed copies of some standard software packages and specialized programs are available to Faculty and Staff for use on institutional computers.

Computer Purchasing

The Office of Campus Computing maintains a set of standard computer hardware and software configurations for USF St. Petersburg. Computer purchases that fall within these standards can be made through the USF Computer Store.

Current Standards

Configuration

University computers will receive a Campus Computing approved configuration.  The standard configuration consists of Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010, Symantec Endpoint Protection, and other productivity enhancing applications.  Computers are required to receive this standard configuration to ensure they meet Campus Computing’s security guidelines and are able to be joined to the Bayboro domain.  Users may not remove the standard configuration from the computers.

After purchasing and receiving a new computer, please submit a service request to have it configured or set up. As part of this service request, our staff will install a combination of software packages that will facilitate the use of the new computer depending on its operating environment (office, conference room, mobile, etc.).

For additional software options, please see the Software & Licensing section below.

Please Note: Departments are required to order network cables, USB printer cables, surge protected power strips, and any other accessories required to connect the computer to the network, a power source, or printer. Campus Computing will provide a short (4′ -6′) network cable to connect the computer to a Cisco IP phone. We recommend that you verify with Campus Computing that network ports are available and active in the location where the new computer will be installed. You can send an email to helpdesk@usfsp.edu if you have any questions or need assistance with your purchasing decisions.

Software & Licensing

Appropriate licensing is required by law for all software products installed on USFSP computers and servers. Failure to strictly adhere to these requirements can place the university in a seriously vulnerable legal position. The University of South Florida System has negotiated a number of licenses for popular software titles.

The following software is available for use on institution computers like classrooms, office, and USFSP laptops. Faculty, staff, and students can request these programs on USFSP computers for university-related work.

  • Endnote
  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • SAS
  • IBM SPSS

Most of the applications listed above are purchasable from the USF Computer Store. Research applications, such as MATLAB, are available from USF Research Computing.

USF Application Gateway

A wide assortment of virtual applications are available through the USF Application Gateway. By installing a small Citrix plugin, you are able to run any of these programs virtually anywhere on the USFSP Network.
