Center for Civic Engagement Mission

The mission of the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is to make USF St. Petersburg distinctive in its commitment to civic and community engagement through the development of the “Citizen Scholar” program.  The objective of the “citizen scholar” model is to combine academic instruction with implementation of concepts learned in the classroom into the local community. The “local community” is broadly defined to include business, educational, and social service agencies as well as the local “laboratories’ faculty use to further their research agendas. We envision that these types of experiential and service learning opportunities will become a feature in every academic program at USFSP.

Spring 2010 Inventory

We would like to announce the completion of our Spring 2010 Citizen Scholar Courses Inventory. Fifty five courses have been identified as Citizen Scholar Courses for the Spring 2010 semester. Thirty three of these courses have been identified as having citizen scholar components in past semesters. This semester we have added 21 new classes to our Citizen Scholar Course Catalog. This semester 18% of courses offered have a Citizen Scholar component to them:  11% of CAS classes, 9% of COB classes and 70% of COE classes are Citizen Scholar classes.

Spring 2010 Faculty Course Development Grant Winners

Please join me in congratulating the following faculty who have been awarded a Faculty Course Development Grant for the Spring 2010 semester:

Monica Postelnicu Ancu, Journalism & Media Studies, "Research Methods in Mass Communication"

Loretha R. Cleveland, Journalism & Media Studies, CAS, "Neighborhood News Bureau"

Trey Connor, Rhetoric & Composition, CAS, "Advanced Technical Writing"

Joseph W. Dorsey, Environmental Policy, CAS, "Environmental Politics and Policy"

Jay Sokolovsky, Anthropology, CAS, "Methods in Cultural Research"

Matt Morrin, Leadership Studies & Student Affairs, "Leadership Fundamentals"

Kay-lynne Taylor, Leadership Studies & Student Affairs "Leadership Fundamentals"

More information about these courses will be posted on our website after the Spring semester is underway. Course syllabi and other materials related to the civic engagement component of each of these courses will be shared on the Faculty page.

That brings to 24 the number of new courses with civic engagement component since the grant program was launched during the Spring 2007 semester.

Again, we wish to extend our appreciation to the leadership of the Student Affairs division and the Learn and Serve America Grant for funding the faculty course development grants for the Spring 2010 semester.
