The Center for Civic Engagement would like to announce that registration for the Fall 2011 Civic Engagement Fair has started. As many of you know, the Civic Engagement Fair is an opportunity for many of our community partners to actively recruit volunteers/interns on our beautiful waterfront campus. The Fair is also an excellent opportunity for our community partners to meet student organization president's and members as the Civic Engagement Fair coincides with Get On Board Day, in which our amazing student organizations actively showcase themselves as well as recruit new members for the upcoming school year.
Registration is free but LIMITED. Lunch for up to two will be provided as well as parking.

Pinellas Christian Center Haitian Relief Collection Drive
In response to the devastation resulting from the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince on January 12, USF St. Petersburg is supporting a local agency, Pinellas Christian Center (PCC), a Haitian outreach, in collecting needed items for relief.
You can bring your donations to the USFSP Center for Civic Engagement table at the Civic Engagement Fair on Wednesday, January 20th (between 10 AM and 2 PM in the Davis Walkway) or you may bring them to the HR office (BAY 206) any time at your convenience.
The Pinellas Christian Center is requesting the following items for immediate relief:
·Over the Counter medication such as Advil, Tylenol, and Aspirin, antibiotic cream
·Linens, especially towels and sheets
·Bottled water
·Hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, toilet paper, lotion, feminine products, etc.)
·Blankets
·Flashlight and batteries
·Canned goods, bags of rice and beans, and any other non-perishable, ready to eat foods
·Baby items – especially diapers, clothing and baby food
This agency has its own air transportation and will be moving the items by the end of the month.

The purpose of these awards is to recognize our citizen scholars on campus and to inspire other students and student organizations to become civically engaged. Applications are now availble for the Chancellor Awars for Excellence in Civic Engagement for the 2009/2010 school year for both invidivual student excellence and student organization excellence.

Lilly Ledbetter, a former employee of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., was paid less than her male co-workers doing the same job for close to two decades. It took her many years to find out about the pay gap but when she did she immediately filed a complaint with the EEOC and brought Goodyear to court. Lilly Ledbetter was awarded more than $3 million in damages, but Goodyear appealed the case all the way to the Supreme Court which reversed the lower court's findings. Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and President Obama signed the bill into law on January 29, 2009.
The students in Dr. Judithanne Courfield McLauchlan's Women and the Law class will present research posters on topics related to gender discrimination in the workplace. The research posters will be on display from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the CAC Core. Join our Citizen Scholars as they showcase their findings.

Please plan to attend an information session for the Washington Center. The center is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that coordinates internships in the D.C. area. In addition to an internship most students also take an academic course, attend a leadership forum, and develop a portfolio documenting their experience. Internships are available to all majors, and scholarships are available to help offset costs. Plus, many of federal agencies offer paid internships. USFSP encourages this opportunity, and will help you to determine if this experience is right for you!

The winner of the student award: STEVEN LAPINSKI. Steven is an outstanding example of USFSP's "citizen scholars." Enrolled in the Spring 2008 "Road to the White House" course, Lapinski logged hundreds of hours working on political campaigns since he left for his presidential campaign internship in New Hampshire in December. Upon his return from the Granite State, Lapinski remained active in his campaign, travelling to New Jersey for Super Tuesday. He was able to take what he learned on the presidenial campaign trail (about voter ID, targeting, etc.) and put that to use here in St. Pete managing the special election campaign of Charles McKenzie for House District 55. Steve Lapinski's story -- staying actively involved in the civic engagement component of the course long after the requirements end - is not unique. We have found that many, many of our students enrolled in citizen scholar courses continue their service to the community. Nevertheless, the selection committee wanted to honor STEVE LAPINSKI for his outstanding leadership and service, and for his exceptional ability to take what he had learned in his coursework and put that knowledge into practice in the community.

SIGMA TAU DELTA Under the leadership of President Kelley Hanamean and faculty advisor Dr. Frances Auld, SIGMA TAU DELTA was involved in more than a dozen service-oriented events over the past academic year. SIGMA TAU DELTA's Funky Fall Formal raised more than $800 for USFSP's community partner Habitat for Humanit. It came as no surprise when this event was awarded the Outstanding Program of the Year at the Student Affairs award ceremony. The CASA Toy Drive/Dickens reading perhaps best demonstrates the ways in which Sigma Tau Delta has been able to integrate service into its mission. As they indicated in their application "We always like to combine fostering academic curiosity with serving the community." Congratulations, SIGMA TAU DELTA, for being such an excellent example of the citizen scholar program at USFSP!
The STUDENT BUSINESS ORGANIZATION The STUDENT BUSINESS ORGANIATION, under the leadership of President JOHN WHITMER and advisor BARBRA HIGEL, planned and organized a fabulous event in support of USFSP's community partner PARC. Their event, "Art in the Parc," raised more than $5,000 for PARC - and - indeed - continues to raise funds. Artwork is still on display in the College of Business. The CCE Scholarship was created to recognize student acheivement and commitment to civic engagement. The CCE looks forward to collaborating with the scholarship recipient to promote civic engagement at USFSP.
We are pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of this scholarship:
Undergraduate Winner: Sarah Farnan, Psychology, College of Arts and Sciences
Sarah Farnan is a freshman who recently moved from the United Kingdom. She has traveled to various places in the world including India. She is an honors student who hopes to major in Psychology. Her aim in life is to use dolphin therapy to improve the lives of disabled children.
Graduate Winner: Lily Alcott, MAT/ESOL, College of Education
I am a graduate student in the USF St. Petersburg Education department. I am pursuing a MAT/ESOL degree with an emphasis in Varying Exceptionalities. The Center for Civic Engagement honored me by expressing interest in my proposal for a historical re-enactment of a "Pink Tea". I hope to interest students in exercising their right to vote by presenting a historical format where in the history of voting in the United Stateds is of interest to students. The project will be community based and I envision it as an on-going annual event. I enjoy history. I am researching the life of my maternal grandmother's cousin and anticipate publishing a brief family history of a man whose life intersected with a famous world figure. Her cousin died because of this encounter. The best part of the research has been the inter-generational work I have done with my Aunt. Also, the travel to Rome was a wonderful perk. Largely, the history was unknown to family members and it is now being recorded and preserved for the next generation. There are so many hidden stories and so much history to be told and retold which fascinates me. My goal is to inspire others to learn about the past and better use their knowledge to shape and understand their world.

All faculty, staff, students, and members of the community were invited to purchase a book, as a holiday gift, for a child who will be at All Children's Hospital during the holidays.
The Giving Tree was located at the entry of Barnes & Noble and had book ornaments with the ages of children who spent their holiday in the hospital. On December 20th, all of the donated books were given to the Child Life Department at All Children's Hospital. Eighty-three books were collected.

STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST
The Center for Civic Engagement partnered with Leadership Florida to promote an essay contest that asked, "What is at stake and why should you vote on November 7, 2006?"
The Winner of the contest received $250 and the Runner-Up received $100.
Ten semi-finalists were selected and given recognition at the Get Out the Youth Vote Rally.
Five finalist essays were judged by the St. Petersburg Times to determine the Winner, the Runner-Up, and the three Honorable Mention recipients.

 GET OUT THE YOUTH VOTE RALLY
On Monday November 6, the Center hosted a Get Out the Youth Vote Rally to encourage voter participation in the 2006 elections.
The Semi-Finalists of the Essay Contest were recognized at the event, and students from all over USF St Pete showed up to participate and enjoy the food provided by Leadership Florida.

  GUBERNATORIAL DEBATE WATCH PARTY
On October 24, 2006, the Center hosted a gubernatorial debate watch party in the lobby of Davis Hall.
Approximately 40 members of the USFSP community attended the event, and watched Jim Davis and Charlie Crist debate the issues at hand.
Pizza and refreshments were served due to a generous grant from Leadership Florida.
Discussion of the candidates' views was led by Professor Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan.

 CURRICULUM INTEGRATION GRANT WORKSHOP
On October 20, 2006, the Center brough Luciano Ramos of Florida Campus Compact to USFSP to provide a hands-on workshop, designed to give faculty ideas of ways in which they can incorporate a civic engagement/service learning component in their courses.
Florida Campus Compact also provided the Center with a generous grant which will allow us to award three $1,000 grants – one to a faculty member in each of the three Colleges. The grants will support faculty that add a service learning component to one of their Spring 2007 courses.

 NEW YORK TIMES KNOWLEDGE NETWORK
On October 13, 2006, the Center for Civic Engagement brought Petra Kohlman, Regional Education Manager of the New York Times, to campus for a faculty luncheon and workshop.
Faculty participants were given the opportunity to provide their students with the New York Times, free of charge, for the fall 2006 semester. Also, 200 copies of the Times were promised to be delivered to USFSP each weekday morning from November 6 through December 8.
Discounted Times subscriptions are still available to students. Professors who are interested in bringing the Times into their classroom by asking their students to subscribe can contact kohlmp@nytimes.com for more information.

 WASHINGTON CENTER INTERNSHIP INFORMATION SESSION
On October 10, 2006, Joe Johnston of the Washington Center came to USFSP to lead an information session about student internship opportunities in the nation's capitol.
Academic credit is awarded to program participants. There are opportunities for all majors, both at the the undergraduate and graduate level, and generous scholarship and grant money is available.

 CONSTITUTION DAY WITH CHIEF JUSTICE R. FRED LEWIS
On September 25, 2006, the Center hosted a Constitution Day event featuring Chief Justice Lewis of the Florida Supreme Court.
120 people, from USFSP and the surrounding community, came to hear Lewis speak.
The Chief Justice brought up a number of issues. For example, he spoke about partisanship, "George Washington warned us about becoming too partisan, about separating at the seams, about becoming so party- affiliated that we lose sight of what's good for the nation. I'm here to talk to you about this great nation, to share with you how I think we're having some problems as those lines have separated us at the seams, have torn us apart. We're more alike than we are different."
In regards to modern media outlets he asked, "The basic freedom of the press, what's happening to the press these days? The founders thought we should have a free flow of ideas. But as we look, newspapers are becoming part of one big corporate empire. We're relying on independent reporting from the Internet and other sources, but the question becomes: Are they sufficient to give you and I the facts and information that we need?"

 CAMPAIGN INTERNSHIP JOB FAIR
On September 14, 2006 a number of political candidates and their representatives - including Charlie Justice, Bill Heller, Kim Berfield, Angelo Capelli, and Gus Bilirakis - came to USFSP to recruit students to intern on their Fall 2006 election campaigns.
