Minors in Education (Professional Training Option)
About the Program
The Professional Training Option (PTO) in the College of Education is an approved alternative teacher certification program. It is designed for students interested in teaching at the secondary level in English, Social Science, or Science in the State of Florida. Qualified majors include: English, Journalism, History, Political Science, Psychology, Environmental Science & Policy and Biology*. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required in all coursework and at least 12 of the 21 credit hours must be completed at USFSP. To earn teacher certification also requires submission of transcripts to the Florida Department of Education as well as passing scores on the Professional Education Test and appropriate Subject Area portion of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE).

To be eligible, students must meet the following three requirements:
1. Major in English, Journalism, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Environmental Science and Policy.
2. Earn 21 credits in one of these majors with 12 of the credits earned at USF St. Petersburg, and
3. Have and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA or higher throughout the course sequence of the PTO.

PTO in Science Education (for majors in Environmental Science)
Students satisfactorily completing all of the requirements for the PTO are eligible to take the Florida Teacher Certification Examination to teach 6-12 Biological Science or 6-12 Earth-Space Science.

Exit Requirement Courses: It is strongly suggested that all students who wish to add the Professional Training Option (PTO) take EDF 3604 Social Foundations of Education (3) to fulfill an Exit Requirement in their major. For the English PTO, it strongly suggested that students take also LAE 4464 Adolescent Literature for Middle and Secondary Students (3) as an Exit Requirement.
**EDG 4943, Practicum in Secondary Education includes 60 hours in a high school classroom. To be eligible for the Practicum, all students in the PTO will need to be fingerprinted and have a background check through the Pinellas County School District and must pass all sections of the General Knowledge Test of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam. Fingerprinting is a state requirement for all practicum students in the public schools and the process takes at least 6 weeks.
