Professional Associations - Economics

American Economic Association (AEA)

The American Economic Association (AEA) was organized in 1885 at a meeting in Saratoga, New York, by a small group interested in economics. It was incorporated in Washington, D.C. on February 3, 1923. Today the membership is ca. 18,000. Over 50% of the AEA membership is associated with academic institutions. About 15% are employed in business and industry, and the remainder largely by federal, state and local government or other not-for-profit organizations.

American Bar Association (ABA)

The American Bar Association (ABA) is the largest voluntary professional association in the world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.

Association of Environmental and Resource Economists

The Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) was established as a means of exchanging ideas, stimulating research, and promoting graduate training in resource and environmental economics. AERE currently has over 800 members from more than thirty nations, coming from academic institutions, the public sector, and private industry. It draws from traditional economics, agricultural economics, forestry, and natural resource schools. AERE provides many forums for exchanging ideas relevant to the allocation and management of natural and enviornmental resources.

Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE)

The Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE) is an international organization of economists and other social scientists devoted to analysis of economics as evolving, socially constructed and politically governed systems. AFEE publishes the the Journal of Economic Issues (JEI).

Association for Social Economics (ASE)

The Association for Social Economics (ASE) was established in December 1941 in Washington, D.C. The association was formed to advance scholarly research and writing about the great questions of economics, human dignity, ethics, and philosophy. Its members seek to explore the ethical foundations and implications of economic analysis, along with the individual and social dimensions of economic problems, and to help shape economic polilcy that is consistent with the integral values of the person and a humane community.

Eastern Economic Association (EEA)

The Eastern Economic Association (EEA) is a not-for-profit corporation whose object is to promote educational and scholarly exchange on economic affairs. Towards that end, the Association encourages the freedom of research and discussion. In pursuit of these goals it publishes the Eastern Economic Journal and holds an annual conference and meeting of members.

National Association for Business Economists (NABE)

The National Association for Business Economists (NABE) is an association of professionals who have an interest in business economics and who want to use the latest economic data and trends to enhance their ability to make sound business decisions. There are approximately 2,500 members representing more thann 1,500 businesses and other organizations from around the world. Since its founding in 1959, NABE has continued to attract the attention of the most influential and prestigious economic leaders in business. Past Presidents have included several former Federal Reserve Governors, the former Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve System, Alan Greenspan, and other senior business leaders.

Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics (SABE)

The Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics (SABE) is an association of scholars who are committed to rigorous economic analysis and are interested in learning how other disciplines - e.g., psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, political science, and biology - further our understanding of economic behavior. An important function of SABE is to serve as a forum for research which may not find either comprehension or acceptance in conventional economics societies. SABE also aims at facilitating communcation between economists and scholars trained in related disciplines.
