First Year Composition

Based on the WPA Student Learning Outcomes, ENC 1101 and 1102 share a common approach to the teaching and the practice of writing. Each of these courses focuses on using compositions (textual, digital, oral/visual) to demonstrate rhetorical knowledge; critical thinking, reading and writing; composing processes; knowledge of conventions.

In addition to these common foci, Composition I focuses on Conversations: Academic, Political, and Personal. In Composition I, students will work on:

  • Situating the Conversation: Analyzing, Synthesizing, and Composing with Sources (McGraw-Hill chapters 7 & 20)
  • Composing the Conversation: Argument and Persuasion (McGraw-Hill chapter 8)
  • Adding to the Conversation: Visual Analysis and Composition (McGraw-Hill Chapter 18)
  • Oral/Digital Composing
  • Reflection (guided and self-selected)

Composition II focuses on Communities: Civic, University, and Personal. In Composition II, students will work on:

  • Group Projects
  • Community Writing (outside the academy)
  • Writing in the Discipline
  • Oral/Digital Composing
  • Reflection (guided and self-selected.

Electronic portfolios will be created in Composition I and II. The eportfolios, along with midterm and end of term reflections, will be archived and maintained by the First-Year Composition Program.
