What is PBS? Background and Definition Positive behavior support (PBS) is a research-based approach to supporting people with behavior problems in their homes, schools, and communities. PBS was created for use with children and adults with very serious behavior problems, as an alternative to cruel and demeaning methods often used to manage their behavior. Effective in these extreme cases, PBS has now become widely accepted for all children and is a cornerstone of effective education. With a technical foundation in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), PBS offers a practical, problem-solving approach that embraces strong values about children and families. PBS helps us understand what causes children's behavior so we can select the right strategies. Key Features of PBS The PBS process involves six general steps or components focused on improving children's behavior and family lives: 1.) Establish specific goals for behavior and lifestyle change. 2.) Gather information to develop a better understanding of the child's behavior. 3.) Identify patterns affecting the child's behavior:
4.) Based on this understanding, select and use strategies to:
5.) Put the plan all together and put it in place. 6.) Monitor the results of the intervention, making changes as needed.
