Competitors on beat during ICSA Gill Coed Nationals hosted by USF, Eckerd College and the St Petersburg Yacht Club, May 2013.

USF St. Petersburg Sailing:

The sailing team has two coaches and our own waterfront facility on campus. The team has the support of USF Athletics and the USFSP Student Government. The Sailing Team is given funding for coaching, equipment, and travel. The best way to get good at college sailing is to sail often against the best competition in the country. Consequently, the team travels extensively to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions to compete at inter-conference regattas.

Current team members range from national champions in junior sailing to novice crews who are just learning the sport. Many of our athletes come from the Northeast and Midwest and we also have a large number of Florida residents from around the state. The weather in St. Petersburg can’t be beat which attracts a lot of people. The fall and winter are mild with average temperatures in the high sixties and our springs are windy and warm.

The sailing program is a member of the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA). The team’s home for training and regattas, is the Haney Landing Sailing, located at USF St. Petersburg, and just a short sail to Tampa Bay. Our roster has between 40 and 50 students athletes.  We practice Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 until dark and race in regattas on the weekends. All full-time undergraduate students at USF St. Petersburg are welcome to join the team.
