More Than 380 Make Up Spring 2010 Graduating Class

(St. Petersburg, Fla.) May 6, 2010 – USF St. Petersburg will hold its Spring Commencement Ceremony Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Progress Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater.

Students will graduate from the College of Arts & Science, the College of Business and the College of Education. This semester more than 380 graduates will earn degrees in 31 disciplines.

Four students will graduate as King O’Neal Scholars, having earned a 4.0 GPA:

  • Sybil Corcetti, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Melissa Harris, College of Education
  • Joy Scholing, College of Arts and Sciences
  • Tiffany Tran, College of Education

The Spring 2010 Outstanding Graduate is Alanna Lecher. She graduates Sunday with a degree in Environmental Science and Policy. In the fall, she will enter a PhD program in Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. At USF St. Petersburg, Lecher participated in research projects measuring submarine groundwater discharge along the continental shelf off the west coast of Florida. She tutored US Coast Guard service personnel taking college-level courses, served as a science ambassador to a local elementary school and volunteered aboard a research vessel mapping the underwater landscape of Dry Tortugas National Park.

Two commissioned officers, 2nd Lt. Eric Scherer and 2nd Lt. Michael Mach, will receive degrees in Economics and Criminology, respectively. Lt. Scherer graduates at the top of his cadet class and his first duty station will be at MacDill Air Force Base as a Signal Corps Officer. Lt. Mach will attend Officer Basic Course before heading to his first duty station at Fort Bliss, Texas as an Armor Officer.
